Learn Reiki, one of the more widely known forms of energy healing, with Reiki Teacher Sushila Mertens.
Sushila has been a Reiki practitioner since 1981 and continues deepening her Reiki path. She incorporates the teachings of Komyo Reiki as taught by Hyakuten Inamoto.

Reiki is actually a very simple technique. Reiki is as easy as quieting your mind, getting yourself out of the way by finding the space between your thoughts, and allowing the Reiki energy to flow through you, not from you. By daily practice of self-Reiki, meditating on and living the Reiki precepts, as a Reiki student you are actually following a path to enlightenment. As you heal, you become a stronger, clearer, more pure channel for the Reiki energy. In addition, creativity and intuition increases while the ability to pass this gift of healing on to yourself and others becomes a beautiful outgrowth of your inner spiritual practice.

At New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Campus, one particular study was performed to determine the effectiveness of Reiki treatments on the autonomic nervous system. This “blind, random study” included a Reiki treatment group, a “sham” treatment group and a “control” group. The testing began with all participants at “baseline” autonomic nervous systems levels. The results within the Reiki treatment group showed a lowering of these levels including heart rate, respiration and blood pressure.

It’s interesting to note that Columbia/Presbyterian was one of the first hospitals to offer Reiki as part of their Integrative Medicine Program (CIMP). The now famous cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Mehmet Oz brought tremendous attention to Reiki when he invited Reiki practitioners to treat patients during open heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Dr. Oz is often quoted as saying, “Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals.”

There have been many other controlled studies submitted to peer-journals and to The Touchstone Process for review. Ailments and disorders that tested favorably to Reiki treatment include:
1. Post operative pain after tooth extraction
2. Cognition in elderly, related to dementia/Alzheimers
3. Pre-operative relaxation and post-op pain
4. Pain in chronically ill patients
5. Depression and stress
6. Well-being in Reiki practitioners

Deepening My Reiki Journey

Sushila Mertens receives Shinpiden (4th Level) Komyo Reiki certificate from Hyakuten Inamoto.

On October 8th and 9th, 2011, I had the privilege of attending the Komyo Reiki, Shinpiden (Teacher/Shihan) class with Hyakuten Inamoto. I am now authorized to teach Komyo Reiki. This is a natural fit for my understanding of wellness and spirituality. I invite you to begin or add to your experience of Reiki by attending an upcoming Reiki class or Circle.

Komyo Reiki, the system Hyakuten Inamoto has created, presents Reiki as it was understood and commonly practiced in the 1930’s in Japan. This system places emphasis on spiritual unfoldment through the practice of Reiki Ryoho, aiming for “satori” or enlightenment.

Komyo Reiki is a “keep-it-simple” Reiki system and practice. The practice motto is: “Put your hands, Surrender, and Smile”

Moon Bear Sanctuary Yurt

Sushila Mertens will be giving the class at the beautiful Moon Bear Retreat Center near Scotts Flat Lake, Nevada City. This is a Wednesday evening and all day Thursday class.

Instruction will be given in the Usui system of attunements as well as the Komyo Reiki system founded by Hyakuten Inamoto. Class time for practice is included so the student becomes confident in administering Reiki attunements. The Healing attunement is given and received by all students. This class is a powerful healing experience. A class manual is included that gives detailed steps for giving all the attunements.

Moon Bear Sanctuary Labyrinth

There will be time for walking the Moon Bear labyrinth before, during, and after the class. See our Resources page for more information about labyrinths.

This class requires an interview and demonstration of your Reiki practice and certificates for Reiki I and Reiki II.
If both student and teacher agree to work together, the student may receive additional support in co-teaching Reiki I, II, and Master Teacher classes.
