Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Today we visit Germany’s historic city Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This charming city is still completely surrounded by it’s medieval city wall, but it provides little protection against the throngs of invading tourists.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a top tourist destination for many reasons. It has museums, city tours, shopping, and restaurants, but the best attraction is the city itself. The old city is remarkably well preserved and you can spend a day just walking through the streets, the old castle garden, and around the city wall.

Here are a few tourists tips for Rothenburg:

Rothenburg Night Watchman

Nightwatchman tour: A fun and informative tour. The nightwatchman is quite humorous and his stories about the citys history are very entertaining. It’s more focused on history though so you don’t see much of the city. You can do that on your own with the tourist map.

Rothenburg Schneeballen

Schneeballen: You have to try one but they aren’t very good. The taste is a little bit like cardboard with sugar. We tried one original and one “filled with egg liquor and marzipan” but it actually wasn’t filled with anything, which was very disappointing.

Rothenburg Meistertrunk Clock

Meistertrunk: According to legend, the towns mayor drank a three liter pitcher of wine to save the city from invaders. In the city center there is a clock with a little figure that re-enacts the drink ever hour during the day, and there is also an annual festival celebrating the event. You can also find a miniature replica of the meistertrunk clock in the Landswehr Bräu am Turm bar.

Rothenburg Christmas Museum

Christmas Museum: This museum is a little bit over the top. It’s has more christmas ornaments, decorations, and kitschy stuff than you could imagine. It is also a bit of a maze, and I almost had a panic attack that I would be forever lost in christmas land.

Rothenburg Shopping

Shopping: There are all kinds of kitschy stores with cuckoo clocks, biergarten signs, the funky rotating candle things, and my favorite, swords and medieval weaponry.

Rothenburg Castle Garden

Old Castle Garden: If you need to take a nap after all the excitement this is a peaceful place to rest. There are also a lot of great views from here, especially for sunset.

Photos: During the day your photos will be full of tourists, but at night the city is practically empty and perfect for great night shots.

Rothenburg is a really fun city to visit if you like history and medieval cities. Here a few more of my pictures from Rothenburg ob der Tauber:
