For a place that Rick Steves lists as a “lowlight,” Heidelberg wasn’t all that bad. The castle is really cool because it is big and still partially destroyed courtesy of the Frenchies. The castle has a pharmacy museum that is actually not boring and a giant wine barrel. The city itself is also really nice with a number a good bakeries, shops, and restaurants. I really enjoyed my short stay in Heidelberg, but there were already quite a few tourists for the off season. I can see how it might get out of hand and become a lowlight in summer when it’s packed with tourists.
