I went up to Lovers Leap in the South Lake Tahoe area for some camping and my first multi-pitch climb. My henchman, Mr. Falknor, and I climbed the two classic beginner climbs on Hogsback: Knapsack Crack and Deception. We arrived Friday night to setup camp and locate our climbs, which was a good thing, because we had a lot of trouble finding them. We didn’t realize Hogsback was to the left of the trail through all the brush, and we kept trying to look for our routes on the main wall.
Saturday morning we headed out around 7:30, and we were the first people on the rock. We had practiced by climbing 10a and 10b leads in the gym, and by trad climbing our favorite crack at Castle Rock, so we were pretty set. Knapsack Crack was almost too easy, and I felt like I could have walked up it with no gear and no real technical climbing. Deception was much more exciting, and involved a fun self cleaning incident that slowed us down for a bit.
After a fun day of climbing Saturday, some more friends showed up to cook us an awesome dinner featuring a full baked potato bar and steak. We camped out Saturday night, and then Sunday we headed out for a hike around Wrights Lake. The water was crystal clear and we got some excellent photos.
Overall it was an awesome trip, and we are definitely going back this year to do Corrugation Corner!
